Acting in a decade filled with all kinds of melody, Donovan couldn’t have been more than another cool, at least, band. But, admittedly, Donovan might’ve been even more than this for their catchy tunes somehow release the senses, settling this way “Sunshine Superman” as one more musical gem. Especially for the old audience or the newest one, sounds like the ones of Donovan are like fresh breath in a state of asphyxiation. The genre they move into is widely spread, yet at the same time tightly enclosed inside the limits of psychedelia with many of its cliches coloring their beautiful harmonies. Besides the rock/pop idiosyncrasy they’re possessed by, Donovan’s members use many sounds from many different instruments and they create beautiful music. Simple as that. One could describe their tunes mainly as vocal since, indeed, the voice of Donovan leads the nice musical background created by both Bobby Ray and Eddy Hoh. One of my favorite songs off of this release is the “Three Kingfishers” track wherein Shawn Philips plays some really catchy tunes on sitar. Get this one, it’s a hell of a trippy record. Before the end of this review, it’d be wise to mention the fact that Eric Ford and Jimmy Page are on this record’s electric guitar duties. Still then, Jimmy was the most wanted session guitarist. Until three years later, of course…
